Renesas Electronics and TSMC Collaborate to Develop 28-nanometer Microcontrollers for Next-Generation Green Cars and Self-Driving Cars

September 1, 2016, Tokyo, Japan, and Hsinchu, Taiwan - Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723 Renesas) and TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) today announced that they have jointly developed 28nm embedded flash memory (eFlash) Process technology to produce microcontrollers (MCUs) that support the new generation of environmentally-friendly cars and self-driving cars. Automotive MCUs manufactured with this new 28-nanometer process technology are expected to provide samples in 2017 and mass production by 2020.

Renesas and TSMC have been working closely together to develop MCU products with on-chip flash memory since the 90-nm technology era. In order to make future eco-friendly cars and self-driving cars more energy-efficient and more reliable, the two sides will cooperate in the development of 28-nanometer MCUs after cooperating on a 40-nanometer MCU platform and producing four years of production. Through this cooperation, Renesas has high reliability and high-speed advantages of MONOSeFlash technology, which will combine TSMC's high-performance, low-power, 28-nm high-k insulating layer + metal gate (HKMG) process technology to produce the world's top cars MCU products are used to support a wide range of applications such as sensor control for autonomous cars, coordinated control between electronic control units (ECUs), high-efficiency fuel engine control for eco-friendly cars, and high-efficiency motor drive control for electric vehicles.

In order to meet the stringent requirements for high performance and safety of self-driving cars in the future, a new generation of MCUs uses 3D radar to monitor the surrounding environment of the vehicle to realize high-precision sensing functions, integrate data from multiple sensors, and have automatic driving operation. Real-time judgment processing capability ECUs that can safely control autopilot also require a new generation of MCUs to quickly handle complex control tasks (including fail-safe operation capability, safety, and support for coordinated control among multiple ECUs) and improve overall system energy efficiency. And functional safety. At the same time, in order to comply with stricter emission regulations, the engine of the new generation of eco-friendly cars also requires powerful computing performance to control the new fuel system. It also requires powerful and large-capacity on-chip flash memory to accommodate larger firmware programs. As the market demands more and more environmental protection, it also requires longer battery life for electric vehicles (EVs) and rechargeable hybrid vehicles (PHVs). This requires MCUs to have higher computing power and higher functionality. Integrated to control more efficient and smaller motor frequency converters. Large-capacity flash memory is also indispensable. It can more accurately support environmental regulations and standards in various countries, and can wirelessly update control procedures through over-the-air (OTA). In addition, MCU embedded flash memory technology with excellent performance and excellent security is also necessary to create a new generation of control technology for a safe society. The applicable fields include Industrial 4.0 and other industrial fields and social infrastructure.
