NXP And Microsoft Will Revolutionize Your IoT Device!
- Apr 27, 2018 -

NXP Semiconductors announced the integration of Layerscape System-on-Chip (SoC) platform with Microsoft Azure IoT Edge. As a result, developers can use the Trusted Computing Platform to easily create a variety of ready-to-use applications within the rich framework provided by Azure IoT Edge.

To run cloud-based applications on edge devices, you need a secure execution environment. Layerscape SoC ensures the secure execution of Azure IoT Edge computing and helps run network, data analytics, and computationally intensive machine learning applications.

Tareq Bustami, senior vice president of NXP Digital Network, commented: “We are very excited to work with Microsoft to accelerate the development and adoption of secure edge computing. Microsoft Azure provides a rich cloud environment that our customers rely on. Azure IoT Edge is Edge devices securely connect to the Azure cloud and provide important support."

Layerscape SoC supports common open source virtualization environments such as Linux and Docker containers. Microsoft Azure IoT Edge leverages this feature to enable customers to deploy applications to edge devices in a secure Docker container.

NXP’s security approach for Layerscape products follows Microsoft’s recommendations in a research paper entitled “Seven Properties of Highly Secure Devices.”

Sam George, director of Microsoft's Azure IoT at Microsoft, said: "SoC provides security gateways that are critical for handling edge services in IoT deployments. NXP integrates Azure IoT Edge with Layerscape, meaning that developers can easily pass security. Gateways deliver IoT solutions to edge devices."

Layerscape also provides NXP EdgeScale tools that OEMs can use to remotely configure large numbers of edge computing devices and connect them to Azure IoT services.
